Maharishi Markandeshwar University, Mullana, near Ambala in the state of Haryana, India, erstwhile known as Maharishi Markandeshwar Education Trust was founded with the objective of social, educational and economic upliftment of society in the year 1993, in the name of Lord Shiva’s devotee, “Maharishi Markandeshwar Ji”. MM University Trust, Mullana - Ambala has become a symbol of quality education in technical, professional and medical streams in northern India and has been carrying on its lineage for over 16 years. The Maharishi Markandeshwar Educatational Trust has the proud privilege of establishing the first self financing Engineering College, first self financing Medical College and the first Self Financing Deemed University in the state of Haryana .^[1]

These institutes are also approved by the regulatory bodies like Medical Council of India, Dental Council of India, Indian Nursing Council, Indian Association of Physiotherapists and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).^[2]

Infrastructure

The campus of the University which has already developed into a small township is ideally located on an area of about 180 acres of land on the bank of Markanda River with exotic lush green surroundings of green fields, high trees and rural folk with all facilities of modern amenities on its campus.

The University has its own civic facilities like water supply, sewerage and electrification with provision of high-powered soundless generators to ensure uninterrupted electric supply in each of the buildings. Intercom system with over 750 connections, connects offices, hostels and Residential Complex in the university to facilitate free flow of communication.

The campus has two shopping centers with two Banks namely Oriental Bank of Commerce and State Bank of India Branch with ATM facilities besides Post office with Speed-Post service, Petrol Outlet and shops to provide basic amenities. Two Auditoriums with seating capacity of about 1000 and 1500 persons respectively are available on the Campus. In addition, an open air theater is also available with a capacity of about 2500 person.^[3]

Accommodation

A 3-star Hotel-cum-Resort is coming up to provide accommodation to visitors and also to act as Laboratory for the students of its Institute of Hotel Management. A centrally air-conditioned MM International School with high quality infrastructure consisting of two multi-storied teaching blocks, hostel facilities, administrative block, Library-cum-Lab complex, Sports-cum-Physical Education complex, with Gymnasium and facilities of a number of indoor as well as outdoor games, including Swimming Pool are also present.

Investigation

In 2011, the institute was the subject of an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the process in which it first got recognition by the AICTE, and then the deemed university status. In April, the CBI questioned several Ministry of Human Resource Development (MRD) officials.^[4] In September, The MRD asked the CBI to investigate deeper into the subject. According to a report by the Times of India, an initial application for the status of deemed university was rejected by the University Grants Commission, but a second application, filed a month later without specifying any criteria of excellence, was accepted.^[5]
