Amateur career
Roger Mayweather has trained Vargas since he first laced on a pair of gloves at age eight and since he was ten years old Jessie has also been trained by former world champion Cornelius Boza Edwards.[3]
Jessie had an impressive amateur career of 120–20. He was a two-time Mexican National Champion, a two U.S. Junior National Champion and was a member of the 2008 Mexican Olympic Team.[4][5]
Professional career
In September of 2008, Vargas won his pro debut against the undefeated Joel Gonzalez by first round K.O.[6]
Jessie became infamous when in a fight against Trenton Titsworth, Vargas was kissed on the neck and an enraged Vargas responded by hitting on the break. Titsworth was deducted two points, Vargas one.[7][8]
In his twelfth fight he knocked out a former IBO Light Welterweight Champion Daniel Sarmiento of Argentina.[9][10] The bout was the main event of FSN's Fight Night Club.[11][12] In his next fight Vargas won a eight round unanimous decision against Mexican Ramón Montaño on the undercard of Amir Khan vs. Marcos Maidana.[13]
On April 8, 2011 Jessie stopped former WBA Light Welterweight Champion, Vivian Harris. This bout was televised on TeleFutura.[14]
