Gordon Marshall (sociologist)

Gordon Marshall, CBE, FBA is a sociologist and director of the Leverhulme Trust in England.[1]

Between 2003 and July 2011, Professor Marshall was the vice-chancellor of the University of Reading.[1] During his term of office, there was controversy over the closure, on economic grounds, of a number of departments including Physics[2]and Health and Social care[3].

Prior to joining Reading University, Professor Marshall was formerly the chief executive of the Economic and Social Research Council, an official fellow of Nuffield College at the University of Oxford, professor of sociology at the University of Bath, and taught at the University of Essex and the London School of Economics. He has also held appointments as a visiting professor at several European universities.[4]

Professor Marshall has written extensively in the areas of social class, distributive justice and the culture of economic enterprise. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2000 and awarded a CBE in 2003 for his services to economic and social science.[4]
