- Dwarf Arctic char
-
The Dwarf Arctic char, Salvelinus alpinus taranetzi, and the Taranets char, also Salvelinus alpinus taranetzi are one of three widely recognized subspecies of the Arctic char, Salvelinus alpinus that are found in North America. Although similar taxons of Arctic char occur in Eurasia, authorities do not agree whether these fish should be classified as Salvelinus alpinus taranetzi, or whether they should be classified as separate and new subspecies or species. See Arctic Char for more on this. The issue of the classifications of similar taxons will most likely not be resolved soon. However, Salvelinus alpinus taranetzi remains to be a valid subspecies.
Salvelinus alpinus taranetzi is rarely sea-run and most populations are found in lakes in the northern part of North America. The Dwarf Arctic char is steely grey with pale white spots, and parr marks often are found in adults.
