The road has been planned since the 1970s, initially as part of motorway A2. After protests by the inhabitants of city districts it was to pass through, the planned road was downgraded to expressway standard, though the route was not changed.
Construction of the first, 3.9 km long section between interchanges Lotnisko (junction with S79) and Puławska started in September 2009.[1] Construction of the second, 11.1 km long section between interchanges Konotopa (junction with A2) and Lotnisko started in the Summer of 2010.[2] Both will be completed in the 3rd quarter of 2012, with the road passable to cars in 2nd quarter of 2012 in time for Euro 2012 championships.
These two sections will form the western half of S2. The eastern half, with a bridge over Vistula river, will be built between 2013 and 2016.[3]
