Alex Barnett (mathematician)

Dr. Alex Barnett is a distinguished applied mathematician and musician who teaches mathematics at Dartmouth College.[1] He is well known for his high frequency eigenfunction calculations which are some of the fastest in the world.[2] He attended Cambridge University and received his Ph.D in theoretical physics from Harvard University. He has written extensively on topics such as efficient and accurate computational methods for waves, PDE eigenvalue problems, periodic problems, and quantum chaos.[3][4] He has also done research on mathematical ecology and inverse problems in medical imaging.

Barnett has been honored with many awards and grants including First Prize in the XXI International Physics Olympiad,[5] The Hockins Prize, The Kennedy Scholarship, The Harold T. White Prize and numerous National Science Foundation[6] Grants.

Barnett is also an accomplished musician who plays the keyboard in numerous jazz and funk bands. He has composed the music for a number of films[7] by director Liz Canner.

A native of Manchester, England, Barnett currently lives in Vermont with his wife filmmaker Liz Canner.
