It is a rather young district, which was split from the Feldkirch district only in 1969.

Notably, these three are the biggest town in Vorarlberg (Dornbirn), the youngest town in Vorarlberg to receive town privileges (Hohenems, in 1983), and the largest market town in Austria (Lustenau).
