- District of Galicia
-
The District of Galicia (German: Distrikt Galizien, Polish: Dystrykt Galicja) was an administrative unit of the General Government in Nazi-occupied Ukraine from 1941 to 1944 centered in Lemberg (Lviv).
It was composed of Western territories of Ukraine, during the interwar period incorporated into the Second Polish Republic. In 1941 after Operation Barbarossa those territories were taken over by Nazi Germany and incorporated into the General Government until they were retaken by the Red Army in 1944.
The area was governed by Karl Lasch from 1 August 1941 to 6 January 1942, and by SS Brigadeführer Dr. Otto Wächter from 6 January 1942 to September 1943. Wächter utilised the district capital Lemberg as a recruitment base for the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS Galicia (1st Ukrainian).
