This is the first game developed by Tomonobu Itagaki, known for creating the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive franchises, after leaving Tecmo in 2008 and forming his own game studio, Valhalla Game Studios, along with other members who had left Team Ninja in 2009. This is also the first game Tomonobu Itagaki is developing for the PlayStation 3. The game is a departure from Itagaki's previous genre, fighting games, while this game is a third-person shooter instead.[2]

Gameplay
The game's primary gameplay is a third-person shooter combined with deep melee and fighting systems which game director, Tomonobu Itagaki, is known for.[2]
Story
Though little is known about the story so far, it can be seen from concept art that the game will be taking place around the world with Asian, European and American locations being illustrated in the game's concept art. The game's backstory is based on the Kessler syndrome theory where debris built up in low-Earth orbit may collide with each other and subsequently compound which causes increased orbital collisions causing the use of space travel and satellites unfeasible.[2]
Wii U Version
Although a version of Devil's Third for the Wii U has not been confirmed, Itagaki reports that the game would run perfectly fine on the system. Devil's Third uses the same game engine as Darksiders 2, which has been confirmed as a launch title for Wii U.[3]
