Detour, JHBMM

Started in 2008 by the Mass Media department of Jai Hind College, Mumbai, Detour is one of Mumbai's premier inter-collegiate media festivals. It is annually hosted over a period of 3 days at the Jai Hind College, Mumbai. Both, the first and second editions of Detour were won by the RD National College.

Origin

Detour was started by the students of Jai Hind Bachelor of Mass Media Batch of 2007-2010. Guided by the co-ordinator of JHBMM, Dr. S. Varalakshmi and assistant co-ordinator Mrs. Akila Bharat, Detour in its very first edition created ripples across the city's BMM circles. It was held on the 8th, 9th and 10 December 2008 at the Jai Hind College campus. The celebrity judges for Detour '08 had been Siddharth Anand, Raghav Sachar, Ronit Roy, Kitu Gidwani, Vinay Pathak. The festival closed with the trademark Detour Awards Night ceremony, wherein winners of various events and title winners were announced.

Detour '09

Detour's second edition was hosted on the 27th, 28th and 29 October 2009. The chief guest for the Awards Night had been bollywood actor Imran Khan. The festival was hosted at the Jai Hind College campus and Not Just Jazz By the Bay. This edition of Detour was organized by the Jai Hind BMM Batch of 2008-2011. Among the many other celebrity judges hosted, a few were prominent Indian models Pia Trivedi and Sahil Shroff, bollywood actress Konkona Sen Sharma, critically acclaimed film-maker Jagmohan Mundhra, fashion designer Vikram Phadnis and bollywood director Tarun Mansukhani.

Detour '10

The third edition of Detour will be held over the 3rd, 4th and 5 December 2010. The festival will be organized by the students of the JHBMM Batch of 2009-2012.

Events

Journalism Events Journalism events at Detour are carefully chosen and assembled in order to equally and fairly test participants' skills, such as those of reporting, story editing and article writing. Detour '10 involves events pertaining to both broadcast and print journalism in order to assess the participants' skill to strike a balance between the media and do justice to each of them individually.

Advertising Events Jai Hind BMM recognises advertising as an essentiality in the cut-throat competitive commercial markets today. Therefore, the advertising events undertaken by Detour '10 primarily seek to arouse participants' creativity and explore new tools and ideas to lure customers. Time limits and content restrictions are enforced so as to provide a feel of the industry in its true form.

PR Events The practice of maintaining strong Public Relations (PR) has over time been increasingly prioritized by media firms. While the PR events at Detour '10 test the participants’ flair of handling an unexpected occurrence or situation,they are largely created to evaluate the participants' astuteness to communicate, build and maintain a brand image.

Film-making Events Filmmaking at Detour is regarded as an extremely integral process as not only in terms of commercial cinema, but also documentaries and advertising. Subsequently, the film-making events covered under Detour '10 simultaneously test the aesthetic and technical appeal of a film, and participants' aptitude to effectively communicate the allotted concepts and ideas within the regulated time frame.

Cultural Events Even the best mediapersons need to de-stress, and BMMiites are no less. Therefore, Detour brings in competitions of fashion shows, theater and dance. Thematic conditions are enforced to make for a fair contest between contingents. We also arrange for an event involving rock bands from participating colleges competing against each other for the top spot.

Way To The Title

Participating contingents are required to win as many events from each of the above listed categories as they can. Points are awarded based on the position secured by them in each event. At the end of the 3 days, the contingent with the most points accumulated is declared title winner, followed by contingents securing second and third place.

Detour Trademarks

Your Own PR : An event pertaining to Public Relations that in its implementation created an impression and soon became what Detour participants look forward to the most. The event requires participating contingents to promote themselves and gain the most attention from the crowd over the 3 days of the fest. The event is judged primarily by the PR department of Detour and professionals from within the PR industry. Ever since it was first held in 2008, this event has become a trademark event in all BMM festivals held in the city.

The Detour Awards Night : The closing ceremony of Detour is the most glamorous one of all others held by fellow BMM fests. Participants, Detour volunteers, judges and other guests alike are given star treatment at this awards ceremony that is no less than a bollywood awards function. While the main purpose of the ceremony is to announce the various events' and title winners, it also gives the participants a taste of the glamorous and entertaining side of the media through dance performances, fashion shows and celebrity presence.
