Tidong

Tidong

The Tidong are an ethnic group of Borneo, residing primarily in the Bulungan Regency, in the province of East Kalimantan, Indonesia and in the Tawau Division, Sabah, Malaysia. Their numbers are estimated to be around 45,000, with 25,000 residing in Sabah. They speak an Austronesian language related to the Murutic languages. Its ISO 639-3 code is tid.

The Tidong are mostly farmers practicing slash-and-burn agriculture. Some are ocean fishermen. They grow sweet potatoes, cassava, lentils, fruits, and vegetables. There farming methods are often accused of being the main cause of forest fires in Kalimantan. Generally, the Tidong are Muslims, but a few remain animist.
