David Barron Corona, a.k.a.: D (1963 - November 27, 1997) was a Mexican Gang member who to become a criminal and a high ranking member of the Logan Heights Gang at the service of Ramon Arellano Felix, one of the Tijuana Cartel's drug lords.[1]
Background
Barron Corona comitted his first murder at 16 years old , Barron got in prison with murder charges. On 1989 he got out of prison when knew about the Tijuana Cartel recruiters later, he was trained in paramilitary tactics including murder ,locating and apprehending gang members by the Tijuana Cartel with some Paramilitary training weapons at ranches in Mexico. In 1993, Barron recruited more than 500 San Diego gang members to cross the border and trained to killed. Barron Corona was recruited when Tijuana Cartel has been waging a war against the Sinaloa Cartel over the Tijuana smuggling route to the border city of San Diego, California. On November 8, 1992 Sinaloa Cartel struck out against the Tijuana Cartel at a disco in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, where eight Tijuana Cartel members were killed in the shootout, the Arellano-Félix brothers having successfully escaped from the location with the assistance of Barron.[2]
In retaliation, the Tijuana Cartel with help of Barron Corona attempted to set up Guzmán at Guadalajara airport on May 24, 1993. In the shootout that followed, six civilians were killed by the hired gunmen from the Logan Heights Gang.[2] The deaths included that of Roman Catholic Cardinal Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo. The church hierarchy originally believed Ocampo was targeted as revenge for his strong stance against the drug trade. However, Mexican officials believe Ocampo just happened to be caught in cross fire.[3][4][5] The Cardinal arrived at the airport in a white Mercury Grand Marquis town car, known to be popular amongst drug barons, making it a target. Intelligence received by Barron was that Guzmán would be arriving in a white Mercury Grand Marquis town car.[3][4][5] This explanation, however, is often countered due to Ocampo having been wearing a long black cassock and large pectoral cross, as well as him sharing no similarity in appearance with Guzmán and having been gunned down from only two feet away.[2]
Barron Corona died during a confrontation in November 27, 1997 in Tijuana, Baja California while he was the victim of a body guard shooting that left him dead while attempting murder the journalist Jesus Blancornelas.[6]
