Born David Kirkpatrick Sale on August 21, 1960 in St. Louis, Missouri, Dave Sale is an American Singer-Songwriter who achieved notability as “Camus” with his top-40 hit “U Who” [1] from 1997’s “Sins of The Father” a release on Atlantic Records which also had a song featured on Baywatch episode "Out of the Blue" alongside Cindy Lauper.[2] In this respect his music has been heard by over 1 billion people.[3] In this project he had the opportunity to collaborate with notable Producers David Kahne and Kevin Killin. A direct descendant of the Dutch who settled New Amsterdam, his parents were intellectuals at Cornell University. Sale has been called “the Bob Dylan for the junque generation”; previous to the Camus project, Sale was active in New Orleans operating the successful “Street Records”, an indie label featuring local and regional new and indigenous musicfrom 1992-97. He also produced, engineered or consulted on projects for diverse musicians such as Rowland Howard [4], Willie Deville, Winton and Branford Marsalis and BeauSoleil to name a few during this period.
After working with Camus, in 2000, Sale went on to co-direct “On The Bus”, a documentary which details the trials and tribulations of Donna the Buffalo, a Trumansburg, New York band. In recent years Dave Sale has been active in New Media Applications and in 2002, along with d’Philip Chalmers, won a Webby Award for Best New Journalism Site for “band.life”, a website promoting school marching bands. Between 2003-06, Sale was active and participated in Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance in upstate New York. It was there he met and began writing /producing former Squirrel Nut Zippers vocalist Katharine Whalen’s 2007 release “Dirty Little Secret” on Koch Records. [5] "Dirty little secret" Was also cited by No Depression Magazine as a "Genre Busting Beauty".[6].
Sales sometimes eccentric writing was described as dazzling and seductive by NPRs David Dye during a World Cafe broadcast.[7] however his work has also been considered "uneven" [8]
Sales song "Famous monster" was selected as a "best new Halloween song" [9]
Presently engaged in the production of “Saturday Night Murder Ball”, an epic rock opera style production, Sale also has plans for a new Camus release in 2010 and a feature film.
