Gagai made his first grade debut for the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium in the first round of the 2011 season against the North Queensland Cowboys, scoring a try.[1] He continued to play in the Broncos' under-20s team, and was named in the Toyota Cup's team of the season.[2] It was Gagai's second such honour, having been named in the same team in 2010.[3]
Gagai's father Ray was a member of the Broncos' squad in the 1989 season. Dane is the cousin of fellow Broncos player Josh Hoffman.[4]
