Hodges was born in Cairns on 25 May 1982. He is the youngest of three boys, his brothers being Clinton and Desmond. He began playing rugby league from the age of five, which had the support of his parents. In 1998, Hodges was offered a four year contract with the
Brisbane Broncos Hodges accepted the contract as part of the Broncos development players. Hodges left school at the age of sixteen, and later on Hodges worked as a storeman for six months.While attending Cains Secondary High School, Hodges played for the Australian Schoolboys team in 1998. Hodges played at fullback for these games. When Hodges came home, he began playing with the U/19 state league, for the team Wests Colts. Hodges didn’t think he could make first-grade rugby league, at the time. But Brisbane Broncos coach Wayne Bennett wanted Hodges to go further. Bennett watched Hodges play well in one of his games with Colts, and put him up into the
Toowoomba Clydesdales , a team in theQueensland Cup . After a few weeks Hodges was to play his first game in the NRL, for the Broncos.Brisbane Broncos

Hodges made his first grade debut for the Brisbane Broncos against the
Canberra Raiders . In his debut, Hodges played exceptionally well, saving two tries in a losing Broncos team.
