Damodar Hota Origin Puri, India Genres Hindustani Classical Music, Udra Paddhatiya Sangeet Occupations Classical Singer, Composer, Scholar Pandit Damodar Hota is a Hindustani classical musician based in Orissa, India. A Top Grade Artist of Doordarshan and All India Radio, he maintains the traditional singing style of the Gwalior Gharana. He is a disciple of Padmashree Nada Maharishi Pt. Balwant Rai Bhatt(Bhav Rang) and Sangeet Martand Pt. Omkarnath Thakur(Pranav Rang). Along with Hindustani classical music, he is a propenent of traditional Odissi music('Uddra Paddhatiya Sangeet').
Career
Pandit Hota was a student scholar of the Orissa Sangeet Natak Academy. He attended the College of Music and Fine Arts at Banaras Hindu University, where he learned under the tutelage of Pt. Balwant Rai Bhatt(Bhav Rang) and Pt. Omkarnath Thakur(Pranav Rang). Later he served as Senior Lecturer of Hindustani Vocal Music and Principal at Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya. For his Doctor Of Music (Sangeet Pravin) degree, he was awarded the prestigious Pt. Mirashi Buwa Puraskar by the A.B.G.M Mandal, Bombay. Pandit Hota holds Madhyama Purna in Tabla and Visharad in Pakhawaj. In addition to his background in Hindustani vocals, Pt. Hota is noted for his contribution to the study and performance of traditional Odissi Music ('Uddra Paddhatiya Sangeet'). He was a member of Orissa Sangeet Natak Academy from 1989-92 and was awarded the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Award in 2004.
Present
Pt. Hota has been teaching music in the gurukul tradition since 1963. During this period he has authored over ten books on Hindustani and Odissi Sangeet. Swar Rang, the music society he founded, organises frequent classical music programs. Since 2007, Pandit Hota has organised the annual Tridhara National Music Conference showcasing Odissi Music (Uddra Paddhatiya Sangeet) alongside the Hindustani and Carnatic forms.
