Dale Emerson Saffels

Dale Emerson Saffels (August 13, 1921 – November 14, 2002) was a United States federal judge.

Born in Moline, Kansas, Saffels was a Major in the United States Army Signal Corps during World War II, from 1942 to 1946. He then received a B.A. from Emporia State University in 1947 and a J.D. from Washburn University School of Law in 1949. He was in private practice in Garden City, Kansas from 1949 to 1979. During that time, he was a county attorney for Finney County, Kansas from 1951 to 1955. He was a member of the Kansas House of Representatives from 1955 to 1963, and was minority leader from 1961 to 1963. He served on the Kansas Corporation Commission from 1967 to 1975, chairing that body from 1968 to 1975. He also maintained a private practice in Topeka, Kansas from 1971 to 1975, and in Wichita, Kansas from 1975 to 1979.

On September 28, 1979, Saffels was nominated by President Jimmy Carter to a new seat on the United States District Court for the District of Kansas created by 92 Stat. 1629. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on October 31, 1979, and received his commission on November 2, 1979. He assumed senior status on November 16, 1990, serving in that capacity until his death, in Topeka.
