Heteristius cinctus, known commonly as the Banded stargazer in Mexico,[3] is a species of sand stargazer, and the only species in the genus Heteristius.[4] It is a tropical blenny found from Mexico to Ecuador, in the eastern central Pacific Ocean.[5] It was named by R.C. Osburn and J.T. Nichols in 1916, originally under the name Dactyloscopus cinctus,[6] and can reach a maximum length of 4.5 centimetres.[5] Blennies in this species swim at a depth range of 1-27 metres,[5] and feed primarily off of zoobenthos and finfish.[7]
