David E. Mungello (born 1943) is an American historian. His research focuses on cultural interaction between Europe and China since 1550, in particular on the introduction of Christianity into China and the reception of Confucianism into Europe, and his an author of a number of books in this field.[1] Not a Jesuit himself,[2] he is recognized as one of the leading modern authorities on the Jesuit missions in China.
D.E. Mungello earned his Ph.D. from University of California at Berkeley in 1973 for his dissertation on Leibniz and Confucianism. He has taught at Lingnan College in Hong Kong, Briarcliff College, Coe College (Iowa), and Baylor University.[1]
