D.B. Russell is a fictional character on the CBS crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, portrayed by Ted Danson as the new Night Shift Supervisor. ^[1]

Personal Background

Russell previously worked as a CSI in Washington state. He comes to Las Vegas as the new Night Shift Supervisor, since Catherine and Nick were demoted as a result of the Langston/Haskell trouble. In the Season 12 premiere, it is shown that he is married with at least one son. Another episode reveals that he also has a daughter.

On the team

He arrives to Las Vegas in the season 12 premiere episode 73 Seconds. He is the new night shift supervisor, Catherine having been demoted to Assistant Night Shift Supervisor. Nick returns from a work-related trip to find that he has lost his office to new CSI supervisor. Nick is still angered that Internal Affairs had removed Ray (who is said to be back in Baltimore, Maryland with Gloria) from being a CSI.

Nick's work ethics are questioned by Russell and his suggesting to a cop to go easy on a suspect has cause Catherine to loudly vent about her demotion and about the CSIs going rogue in Los Angeles. Their heated conversation was interrupted by DB's text for them to go to breakfast on him.

In the episode Bittersweet, Russell confronts Sara. DB hands the case to Sara, who takes apart the concrete blocks with the body parts and finds a young girl with sexual trauma. While DB isn't pleased with her, he doesn't pull her off the case and instead supervises her closely. After the case, DB sits with Sara and asks her out to dinner, as friends.

Reception

The character received overwhelmingly mixed to negative reviews from viewers alike, after several comments made from several fans of the show.^[2] Most of the fans complain that the character is "too humorous" for the show, and that he is nothing like Grissom as the writers intended. They even say that Danson was a poor choice by CBS and that he must be removed from the show.^[3] Although some critics have given mixed to positive reviews for the character and how Danson portrays him.^[4]
