Cutout Collective is an electronic/alternative project based in Johannesburg, South Africa, inspired by music with melody and the analogue/digital divide. The Collective's music is created from bits, bytes and head-popping synths...
The Analogue/Digital Divide: Music is in a period of fusion. Dance artists are making music that people can rock out to. Rock bands are making music that you can truly dance to. It's a rare thing for an audience to sit and watch a band anymore - crowds want to be engaged, and feel like they are part of a moment: not watching a show.Contents
History
Cutout Collective was born out of an experiment to fuse dance and electronic music production styles and instruments with rock song structures. Originally consisting of Jason Hartford and Tim Apter, the band grew to include a live drummer (Max Lehr) and VJ (Flikkerr).
The band were one of indie label Deconstruction Recordings' first signings, and are label mates with Sweat.X and Tale of the Son.
To date, their first single, "8-Bit Logic" off their Eponymous EP was playlisted on the majority of campus radio stations around South Africa, with the music video featuring for many weeks on the MK Top 10 as well as worldwide airplay on MTV Networks. Their remix for Desmond and the Tutus' "Peter" also landed them airplay on Rob da Bank's radio show on BBC Radio 1.Genre
Cutout Collective create music using a fusion of instruments - digital synths, drum machines and samplers meet huge acoustic drum beats and melodic vocals, all under a blanket of imagery and light. Said to sound reminiscent of Depeche Mode, The Faint [1], Kraftwerk,[2] The Presets and The Prodigy[3] they fit as neatly as possible in the categories of new wave revival and electroclash. While the music they make is danceable, it is heavily based on rock songwriting structures, thus allowing them to cross the analogue/digital they straddle, becoming "the eponym for compositions inspired by melody and the digital divide."
