History
In April 2009, Crow Black Sky was formed by Gideon Lamprecht, Kean Malcolmson, and Stephen Spinas, They were joined by vocalist Ryan Higgo soon thereafter, and their first live appearance took place later that year in July. After many auditions, the band was joined by Lawrence Jaeger (Wings of Aggression, The Broken Result) on drums, and Chris Gilbert (Dogs of War) on guitar.
The band entered the recording studio in February 2010, and began work on their debut album, "Pantheion". The album was officially released on 18 December 2010, and was very well received internationally, resulting in a boom in which the album gained tens of thousands of new listeners across the globe.
Chris Gilbert parted ways with the band in February 2011 due to differences in musical taste. He was replaced by Brad Saunders in May 2011.
Crow Black Sky was booked for a national tour in support of international death metallers Kataklysm in May 2011, but the tour was subsequently cancelled.
Plans were announced for a music video for "Stars of God" to be released in the third quarter of 2011, and for work on a second album to commence soon thereafter. A remastered version of "Stars of God" was released on 5 May 2011, in anticipation of the music video.
Musical Direction and Influences
"Musically the band’s sound is an amalgam of styles that incorporate inspired progressive movements, along with classical, atmospheric, and acoustic elements. Their songs are aggressive and at times brutal while also remaining melodically accessible, crisp and heavy."[2]
"Obviously having huge Opeth and Amon Amarth influence, these tracks essentially sound like the best way you could blend those two bands. The death parts are highly melodic, with a lot of double bass grooves and things that make you rock out. While the guitar work is actually a step up on the kings o’ viking metal (that’d be Amon Amarth if you were wondering), it gives it a bit more of an In Flames or Nightingale kind of feel..."
"The musicality and songwriting on Pantheion is of really high quality. It is very easy to get lost in Crow Black Sky's music and a lot of it would not feel out of place in an action/fantasy film, accompanying Tolkien-esque battles or sprawling mountain vistas."[3]
