Canyons School District is a school district in Sandy, Utah, United States which serves the communities of Alta, Cottonwood Heights, Draper, Midvale and Sandy. David S. Doty is the superintendent. It was created after local residents voted to split the Jordan School District. Canyons schools have approximately 33,000 students in 44 schools.[1] There are 29 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, 4 high schools, 1 technical school and 2 Special education schools.
In July 2009, the district proposed a 3.8% increase in school taxes.[2]
A poll commissioned by the district found that 68 percent of parents have a "somewhat favorable" or "very favorable" impression of the district.[3] [4]
On June 22, 2010, voters approved a $250 million, tax-neutral bond to finance new construction in the district, including a new high school in Draper, a new elementary school in the White City area, and upgrades to several other schools, including seismic upgrades and accommodation for ninth-graders in the existing Brighton and Hillcrest high schools as part of a grade re-alignment.[5] In May 2011, the district broke ground on the as-yet-unnamed high school in Draper, to be completed in 2013.[6]
