County Route 23A was a county highway located in Monmouth County, New Jersey, locally known as Wyckoff Mills Road or simply Wyckoff Road. The highway extended a distance 0.70 miles (1.13 km) from U.S. Route 9 to County Route 524, entirely in Howell Township.

History

What was at the time known as the Old Stage Road was taken over by the county on July 10, 1901[2] from the Ocean County boundary (then at County Line Road) to County Route 524 at Adelphia, a distance of 8.14 miles (13.10 km). The 1911 Annual Report of the New Jersey Commissioner of Public Roads stated, "This line was formerly the old stage road, but owing to the deep sand, it had been abandoned by everyone except the few that were compelled to use it. Now all this is changed. The neglected and avoided road is the one most used; in fact, the traffic is so great on Saturdays and Sundays that Adelphia has to station an officer at the end of the road to regulate traffic."[3]

In 1925, much of this route south of the Manasquan River was included as a spur of New Jersey Route 7[4]; in the 1927 New Jersey state highway renumbering it was included as part of Route 4, now a part of US Route 9. North of the Manasquan, the state highway turned to the west to bypass Adelphia, leaving a .70 mile remnant under county jurisdiction. By 1929 this segment was numbered as County Route 80.[5] In the 1937 renumbering of Monmouth County Routes, County Route 80 was included as a part of County Route 23; by 1939 this had been designated as 23A. On November 21, 1967, the Board of Chosen Freeholders, in an exchange of road mileage, decommissioned County Route 23A along with parts of County Route 16 and County Route 35 in Howell Township, and established County Route 524A.[6]
