Stonar School, founded in 1895, is one of the UK's independent leading day and boarding school, at Cottles Park, Atworth, near in Wiltshire, south-west England. It takes girls aged 2–18 who can board from age eight, and boys aged 2–11 in the Prep School. [1] The school which was highly praised for its academic excellence and outstanding pastoral care in its 2008 Independent Schools Inspectorate report is set in 80 acres of parkland and gardens, near Bath.
Pupils regularly achieve outstanding results which are beyond expectations both academically and personally. Stonar is also the market leader in offering an equestrian education alongside the regular academic curriculum. A world renowned Equestrian Centre is headed by international event rider and trainer, Darrell Scaife BHSI, UKCC & British Eventing Accredited Coach. Facilities include indoor school, an 80 x 40m surfaced arena, 4 x X-country courses and stabling for up to 65 horses and ponies. Regular guest trainers include Mary King, Pammy Hutton and Anne Newbery.
The grade II listed Cottles House was built in 1775–78, and was designed by Thomas Jelly and John Palmer (1738–1817) of Bath for Robert Hale. [2] Cottles was built on the site of an earlier house belonging to the Hale family, who also founded the school.The school was evacuated to Cottles House from Sandwich, Kent in 1939, at which time the property had been empty for several years and had begun to deteriorate.[3]
