Set up by a group of Cornish Farmers in 1903, Cornish Mutual is the only general insurer based in the South West of England. The company has an office in Truro.

Cornish Mutual offers insurance to people living in the rural communities of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset. A mutual organisation is owned by its members not shareholders.[1] By being answerable only to its members the company seeks to invest in a better service for them. One of the ways it does this is by giving members access to Insurance Inspectors. These are staff who are not only able to offer a local personal face to face service but, by being based in their local community, are better able to understand the issues facing the members in their area.

Cornish Mutual’s roots are in agriculture and for many years they only offered insurance to farming families. In 1999 the company decided that it would like to broaden its offering to those living in the rural community and broke away from the Cooperative Insurance Society in order to underwrite its own insurances.
