History of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership

The Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) was founded in September 2002.[1] The CBFP was launched at the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD).[2] The Congo Basin Forest Partnership was built on the same framework as the Yaounde Declaration.[1] The Congo Basin Forest Partnership based its purposes off of the Yaounde Declaration's aim "to protect forests through the harmonization of forest policies, protected areas, regulations against poaching, and the adoption of practices for sustainable forest use."[1] The Congo Basin Forest Partnership has no scheduled end date and will continue to operate as long as it receives enough funding.[1]

Purpose of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership

The goal of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership is "to promote the sustainable management of the Congo Basins' forests and wildlife by improving communication, cooperation, and collaboration among all the partners."[1] The Congo Basin Forest Partnership promotes economic development, poverty alleviation, and effective governance by the conservation and sustained management of natural resources, including wildlife and forests.[Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs 1] The Congo Basin Forest Partnership aims to assist partners and their associates to work better through information sharing.[1] The Congo Basin Forest Partnership's objectives include the preservation of the ecology and biodiversity of the wildlife and forests, and placing their use and protection on a sustainable basis for the long-term benefit of both the region and its inhabitants.[1] The CBFP works closely with the Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC), the regional body in charge of forests and environmental policy, coordination and harmonisation, with an objective of promoting conservation and sustained management of the Congo Basin's ecosystem.[2]

How the Congo Basin Forest Partnership Works

The Congo Basin Forest Partnership is an international association comprised of more than 40 governments, international organizations, private sector, and civil society representatives.[Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs 1] The Congo Basin Forest Partnership covers the geographical region of sub-regional Central Africa, mainly around the Congo Basin.[1] The Congo Basin Forest Partnership is implemented in the countries of Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon.[1] The Congo Basin Forest Partnership operates within the framework of the Council of Ministers in charge of the Forests of Central Africa (COMIFAC)..[Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs 1] The Congo Basin Forest Partnership also works in accordance with COMIFAC's strategic plan, the Plan de Convergence.[Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs 1] Unlike most traditional partnerships, the CBFP does not intend to create new institutions but instead to help its partners and their associates to work better.
