Compeyson Great Expectations character Created by Charles Dickens Information Gender Male Nationality British Compeyson was a character in Charles Dickens' novel Great Expectations who abandoned Miss Havisham at the altar and also the man who got Abel Magwitch arrested. He eventually died after being drowned by Magwitch.
Compeyson had a good education when he was a child. He eventually started his own business of forgery with a man called Arthur, Miss Havisham's half brother. They conspired against her. Compeyson fooled Miss Havisham into being deeply in love with him and as a result of this, he managed to get a lot of her money. He eventually got her to agree to buy the brewery Arthur inherited from his father. When the day of the marriage came, Compeyson left her a letter saying that he had left her. This destroyed Miss Havisham and resulted in her laying waste of her house, Satis House.
Abel Magwitch was a convict who worked under Compeyson. They were one day accused of felony and resulted in their arrest. Magwitch got fourteen years and Compeyson only got seven.
