The Communist insurgency in the Philippines refers to conflicts between communist rebel groups and the Philippine government and it's supporters. It includes the Hukbalahap Rebellion and later conflicts involving the New People's Army. During and after World War II, there were several peasant militias fighting against the Empire of Japan and later the government of the Philippines. Eventually these groups embraced communism. The ideology of the rebels has changed over the years. Until 1968, they were predominantly pro-Soviet in nature. However, after 1968, due to the Sino-Soviet Split, they sided with the People's Republic of China and became Maoists. In recent years, the rebel groups have consistently decreased in number, in power and in influence.
