The Nueva ola (Spanish for New Wave) is a term applied to a loose group of musicians, mainly in Spanish speaking South America, who played and introduced rock and roll and other American and European music of the 50s and 60s to their countries. Artist associated with the Nueva ola reached their peak of popularity in the 60s and early 70s. Nueva ola music is coetaneous with Nueva canción music, a music style which together with Nueva ola became the precursors to modern Rock en español that rose to prominency in the 80s.
