Charles Sanford Terry is a translator of Japanese literature into English. He was born in Missouri and during World War II served in the U.S. Navy where he began studying Japanese. After his service, he continued studying the language at Columbia University where he received a masters in Japanese history, and another master's from the University of Tokyo in Chinese history. He has lived in Japan for many years and has translated many books from Japanese into English.[1]
