Charles Wing Krafft

Charles Wing Krafft is a ceramicist in Seattle, Washington who specializes in “disasterware.”

Career

He started making ceramic objects not because he liked ceramics but because he wanted to paint a picture on a plate. To him, the whole studio potter scene stunk of Orientalism.^[1] Krafft began his career as a painter in a small fishing village on the Skagit River in Washington State.^[2] He then moved to Seattle and worked as a museum guard. Krafft has resided in Seattle ever since.

Kenneth Howard, a prominent custom car designer, gunsmith and explosive specialist is the main inspiration behind creating his work. Charlie has exhibited in both national and international galleries. Krafft was a recipient to a grant that allowed him to travel to Slovenia during the Kosovo war.^[3] Krafft's work consists of “disasterware” – images of horrendous events, enclosed in floral patterns, and “spone”, funerary ashes that are turned into bone ash and the Porcelain War Museum project in Slovenia.^[4]

In Villa Delirium, Krafft claims that, he “prefers to be in the company of criminals, undertakers and blue haired grannies".^[5]
