Ch. Birender Singh ( Dumerkha ) is a powerful Jat leader in north India. Born on 25 March 1946, Birender Singh is the Grandson of peasant leader Sir Chhotu Ram. His father Ch. Neki Ram was a politician in pre-partition Punjab. Singh is one of the most heard leaders in India.[citation needed] He has been a long time aspirant of the post of Chief Minister of Haryana.

Early life

Birender Singh ( Dumerkha ) graduated from govt. college Rohtak and completed his post graduation in law from Punjab University Chandigarh. During his entire childhood and college days, Singh was active in sports. He was Captain of the cricket team of Government College, Rohtak, 1964–67 and Punjab University Campus, 1969-70.

Social Service

Birender Singh ( Dumerkha ) has keen interest in setting up of educational institutions for higher and technical education in the State. He is the founder of Birender Singh College of nursing in Uchana, JInd and Bangar Education Trust, Haryana. He was the member of Haryana Harijan Sewak Sangh, 1974-77.

Political Life

Ch. Birender Singh ( Dumerkha ) contested his first election in 1972 and from 1972 to 1977, he was Chairman, Block Samiti, Uchana. He contested election for legislative assembly, Haryana in 1977 from Uchana legislative constituency. And won this seat five times,(1977–82, 1982–84,1991–96, 1996–2000 and 2005–2009. In the three terms (1982–84, 1991–92 and 2005–2009), Singh was the Cabinet Minister, Government of Haryana. He was Chairman, Government Assurances Committee,Haryana Legislative Assembly (1978–79), Chairman, Estimates Committee, Haryana Legislative Assembly (1981–82). He was elected as Member of Parliament inEighth Lok Sabha(1984–89) and served as Member, Estimates Committee Member(1985–87), Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defence(1987–89), Member, Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Energy (1987–91). In Aug. 2010, Ch Birender Singh was Elected to Rajya Sabha.

President, (i) District Youth Congress 1970-80, (ii) District Congress Committee from 1977–82, (iii) Haryana Pradesh Youth Congress from 1980–82, and (iv) Haryana Pradesh Congress from 1985–86 and 1990–92; Senior Vice-President, World Youth Action against Apartheid, 1987–90; General Secretary, (i) Haryana Youth Council from 1964–66, (ii) All India Indira Congress (Tiwari) from 1995–96, and (iii) AICC, Incharge of Uttar Pradesh Affairs; Special invitee of Congress Working Committee (CWC) 1988-90 and 2004–2005; Member, Central Election Committee, All India Congress Committee; Attended, (i) World Peace and Solidarity Conference at Patna, 1976, (ii) All India University Students Welfare Conference at Delhi, 1966, (iii) International Youth Conference at New Delhi and Moscow, 1982 and (iv) Youth Conference of Non- aligned countries, 1986

Currently, Birender Singh is the Gen. Secy of All India Congress Committee, and Incharge of three important states viz. Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal.
