Kastania (Ioannina), Greece

Kastania or Kastanea (Greek, Modern: Καστανιά, Katharevoussa: Καστανέα meaning chestnuts), accented forms: Monastíri, older forms: -o and -on, is one of the most important villages in the area of Konitsa (Ioannina Prefecture) in northern Greece. It is in the municipality of Mastorochori and serves as a municipal seat. Its 2001 population was 370 for the village. The GR-20 (Ioannina - Konitsa - Kozani), the old road is approximately 2 km northwest. Only 34 people remain during the winter months, the remainder are summer residents.

Location

Kastania is located SSW of Kastoria, WSW of Kozani, north or Ioannina and Konitsa and 8 km SE of Pyrsogianni. The GR-20 (Kozani - Konitsa - Ioanina) is 4 km west.

Geography and panorama

Much of the area around Kastania are forested, farmlands are situated within the village.

Kastania is situated on a mountain slope of one of the mountains of the Northern Pindus mountains and overlooks the Arena and Kiafos mountains and the Sarantaporos.

History

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, its buildings were rebuilt. Once a village of around 200 to 300, its population loss begna when emigration occurred at a higher rate until 1981 through to 1991, the population has been declining slowly but lost by half between 1991 and 2001. Kastania became connected with asphalt in the 1980s and the 1990s. more pavement was available in recent years. Electricity, radio and automobiles were introduced in the mid-20th century, television in the late-20th century and computer and internet at the turn of the millennium. In the late-1990s, the ex-community (now a municipal district) joined to become the newly formed municipality of Mastorohoti.

Kastania has a school, a church, a square ("plateia"). Its nearest lyceum (middle school) is in Pyrsogianni and its gymnasium (secondary school) are in Konitsa.
