- Carson City Silver Sox
The Carson City Silver Sox are a future professional baseball team that would be based in
Carson City, Nevada in theUnited States , pending approval, and could soon start play as early as 2009. They are currently known as theReno Silver Sox and have been a member of the independentGolden Baseball League since 2005 when they started as theMesa Miners in Arizona. They relocated to Reno in 2006, bringing their entire roster and coaching staff with them, and began play at theUniversity of Nevada, Reno 'sWilliam Peccole Park , where they stayed until 2008 when they were forced to relocate (see below). Under then-managerLes Lancaster , the Silver Sox won the 2006 GBL Championship by beating theFullerton Flyers 3 games to 1. They are owned by the league and are seeking investors and a new general manager with longtime GM Curt Jacey becoming head of theChico Outlaws onSeptember 1 ,2008 . The team is currently managed by formerSan Francisco Giants outfielderJeffrey Leonard .In late 2006, it was formally announced that the
Pacific Coast League 'sTucson Sidewinders would be moving toReno, Nevada for the 2009 season and would have a new stadium built to accommodate them calledSierra Nevada Stadium . They will remain a Triple-A affiliate of theArizona Diamondbacks . The new PCL franchise has since been renamed theReno Aces effectiveSeptember 23 ,2008 . As a result of the Aces' move to Reno from Tucson, the Silver Sox were forced out of Reno and were originally thought to be absorbed into the GBL's newest team, theTucson Toros . However, word began to spread about the team's possible relocation to Carson City. [Brodesky, Josh. [http://www.azstarnet.com/metro/211061 "Toros could return in new incarnation."] "The Arizona Daily Star". 11 November 2007. 26 December 2007.] This would be the first time ever that Nevada's capital city would host a professional sports franchise, pending approval from the league. (Carson being only about an hour's drive away from Reno, even closer onceInterstate 580 is completed).Local newspapers are reporting that investors are being sought in Carson City to try and get the Silver Sox relocated, but the likelihood of that is up in the air. Some reports have the team folding before the 2009 season, but even that is just speculation. An official announcement was to have been made as early as October 2008, but it could be made as late as December 2008 or January 2009. [Moody, Darrell. If they were to relocate, one of the places that they could play is at the
Western Nevada College 's John L. Harvey Field, but lighting issues could prevent that facility from hosting the Sox. Another location could beCarson High School 's Ron McNutt Field, which would have to be remodeled. Otherwise, a new stadium would have to be built. [Moody, Darrell.
