The Yuba-Sutter Gold Sox are an independent professional baseball team based in Marysville, California, in the United States. They are not affiliated with any Major League Baseball team or organized Minor League Baseball. They play their home games All Seasons RV Stadium, formerly Bryant Field, adjacent to Ellis Lake, in Marysville.

Team History

The Gold Sox were founded in 2002 by Bob Bavasi of Bavasi Sports Partners, LLP, and local auto dealer Don McCullough (1936-2005) and played one season in the independent Western Baseball League. For obvious reasons, the team was named after the nickname of California, the "Golden State", but instead of a sock (used by the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox of MLB and the Reno Silver Sox), they use a gecko as their mascot (similar to the frog used by the Northwest League's Everett AquaSox).

They filled the void left by the folding of the Feather River Mudcats in the WBL before the league itself eventually folded after the 2002 season. They would join the California Coastal League the following season and would stay there until 2004.

In 2005, the Gold Sox became the host team for the "Horizon Air Summer Series", a semi-professional collegiate wood bat league created by Bob Bavasi. Bob and his brother Peter both handled the team as managing partners.

On January 2, 2007, the Bavasis sold the Gold Sox to Fair Oaks, California, attorney Tom Lininger and his wife Karyn. Bob Bavasi remains a major investor in the team and Peter serves as advisor to the Liningers. [ [http://www.goldsox.com/news_releases010207.htm Mid-Valley Family Buys Gold Sox] (Gold Sox website, January 2, 2007)] They do have hopes of returning to full-blown professional baseball in the future.

Golden Baseball League-bound?

In 2004, there had been talk about the team being picked up by the newly-formed Golden Baseball League (where the nearby Chico Outlaws currently play), but it was dismissed as speculation at the time.

There is continuing speculation about the team possibly becoming a part of the league. One newspaper article shows a brief mention of Marysville still being considered as a future GBL expansion city. [ [http://www.nevadaappeal.com/article/20080916/SPORTS/809159922 GBL wants to keep Silver Sox in area; local investors sought for team] ("The Nevada Appeal", September 16, 2008)] Should the league bring a team to Marysville, it may absorb the Reno Silver Sox, who are being forced to relocate due to the arrival of the Pacific Coast League's Reno Aces. However, those reports have that team relocating to Carson City, Nevada. Still, the league is considering bringing the Gold Sox into the GBL fold in the future.
