The Wreck of the Nancy Lee

The Wreck of the Nancy Lee

"The Wreck of the Nancy Lee" is a famous old maritime sea shanty, the lyrics and music written by Arthur LeClerc c. 1930. It became a popular music-hall song in the first half of the 20th Century, and was often sung by British soldiers in the Second World War.

As the song was shared among soldiers, the original verses were often not remembered, so many made up their own verses. The most famous part of the shanty was the chorus, which was faithfully remembered by those who perpetuated the song.

The chorus is as follows:

:'All the crew was in despair,:Some rushed here and some rushed there,:But the Captain sat in the Captain's chair,:And he played his ukulele as the ship went down.'

"The Wreck of the Nancy Lee" was recorded, along with other old maritime songs, by Tom Lewis - an ex-Royal Navy serviceman - on a CD album entitled "Poles Apart" (2001).
