History
Nethaji Sports Club was formed on 8 April 1946 in the grounds Pachaiyappa’s High School in Esplanade. The club was named after the Indian national hero 'Netaji' Subhash Chandra Bose.
Nethaji Sports Club quickly worked its way up to become affiliated with the then Madras Football Association. It reached the first division in 1949, a remarkable achievement for a club which was just three years old, and which lacked financial or institutional backing.
Social commitment
The club is noted for its commitment with working with the poor of India to provide opportunities for talented players. The club identifies potential players from the economically weaker sections, and then provides them with high quality training and diet. Many players have benefited from this program, giving them a break in life that may otherwise have not been possible. This commitment has helped contribute to keeping the club in the country's top league for six decades.
In the wake of the 2004 tsunami, members of the club travelled to the village of Uyyalikuppam (near Kalpakkam) to assist the rehabilitation of those affected.
