Indian Institute of Technology Patna ( also known as "IIT Patna" or "IITP"), an autonomous institute for education and research in science, engineering and technology located in Patna, India. It is the eight member of the IIT fraternity.

History

Indian Institute of Technology, Patna ("IITP") was formally registered as a society on July 25, 2008 and its academic programmes commenced from August 6, 2008.IIT Patna has been placed under the mentorship of IIT Guwahati during its formative period.

Campus

IIT Patna’s campus will be on the outskirts of Patna in a 600 acre campus. The campus will have 45000 sq ft of space.It is expected that all operations will shift to the main campus by July 2010.Two hostels to house boys and girls are also available next to the academic area.

As for now, Faculty from IIT Guwahati is taking the classes. Classes are currently started in a temporary campus in Navin Govt. Polytechnic, Patliputra Nagar, a posh area of Patna.

Facilities

* HostelsIIT Patna has two hostel buildings which has already been renovated and modernised. The hostel buildings are situated in a walled compound adjacent to institute building. Each hostel has fifty rooms. Each room will have two occupants. Each room has an individual cot, reading table, chair and wardrobe for each of its occupants. The rooms are well lit, well ventilated and will be wired to the local area network for Internet access.

* Computer NetworkIn order to facilitate e-learning every student will be issued a state of the art laptop by the Institute for his/her academic use. A local area network will cater to the students' needs. To start with, the institute will have a 4 Mbit/s (1:1) Internet connection.

* Laboratories All major laboratories are being setup in the institute building. The labs required for the first year courses are ready.

* LibraryThe institute library has a collection of huge nuber of text and reference books related to the courses of study.

* Student Activity Centre (SAC)A student activity centre with modern amenities and a gymnasium will be ready soon. The SAC will be the center of all student co-curricular and extra curricular activities.
