List of airports in North Korea

This is a list of airports in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or North Korea. According to the Federal Research Service of the U.S. Library of Congress, North Korea may have as many as 78 usable airfields, 35 with permanent paved runways, and 19 heliports (2003 estimate), mostly military-civilian dual purpose facilities.

The state carrier, Air Koryo, joined the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in the late 1990s, and North Korea has proclaimed a program to upgrade several airports to international standards; however, the state's secrecy makes it difficult to ascertain their number and condition with certainty.

Civilian and Dual-use Airports

*Sunan International Airport airport codes|FNJ|ZKPY is the primary airport serving Pyongyang and the country's primary international gateway. It has 2 runways, the first (01/19) is 4,037 m and 60 m wide, used mainly for international flights; and the second (17/35) is 3,500 m and 70 m wide.
*Ch'ŏngjin Airport (Ŏrang Airport) (Chongjin, North Hamgyong province) was a small airport handling only local charter flights with a limited passenger flow, and still lacks adequate navigational aids and other facilities. Its single 1,200-metre runway was recently upgraded to 2 km, and may be further extended to 4 km to allow it to serve as a second international gateway.

* Wonsan's Kalma Airport is equipped with 01/19 and 15/33 dual runways. On the south end of the airport is an apron area for air force fighters.
