=Evolution of Home Science in ANGRAU=

The Faculty of Home Science is one among the Faculties of Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University, formerly Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University (APAU), from the year 1964, as per the Land Grant Pattern of United States adopted by ICAR for improving the quality of rural life. Since then, the Faculty of Home Science is functioning with pronounced academic spirit, research urge and extension might.Though initially the trimester system was followed, from the year 1973 the semester system was adopted.

This institution has so far awarded around 2000 graduates, 654 post graduates and 60 Ph.D scholars in various disciplines, who have settled in versatile professions as dieticians, preschool managers, interior designers, apparel designers, community coordinators for development programmes, etc, apart form university teachers and researchers. Among the list of self employment projects, Interior and exterior designing firms, apparel industry, voluntary organisations, day care centers, pre schools, food processing units, diet counselling centers etc are in practice. A vigorous research promoted completion of 50 adhoc projects, which resulted in fabrication of technologies and their extension to urban, rural and tribal communities all over the state.

Under the headship of the Dean, there are 21 Professors, 12 Associate Professors and 16 Assistant Professors on rolls, positioned as teachers in College of Home Science, Scientists in All India coordinated Research (AICRP) and Subject Matter Specialists (SMS) in Krishi Vignan Kendras (KVKs) and District Agricultrual Advisory and Transfer of Technology Centres (DAATTCs). The Administrative Office is ideally located within the college campus, adequate staff.

Transition of Home Science Education

Home Science education was initially designed and structured around the urban home makers and her family and community. With the advent of Agricultural Universities, the focus of Home Science was shifted to the rural family with emphasis on intrafamily resources, since rural families are composite and integrated units which function as both consumption and production units. the curricula was thus formulated in this dimension and appropriately implemented.

The decade 1990-2000 witnessed application oriented education, to transform the role of students from job seekers to job providers, keeping in view the fast changing demands of the community. this decade laid a foundation for may educational reforms like Rural Home Science Work Experience Programme (RHWEP) in villages, skill and entrepreneurial oriented teaching, four year duration for UG programme, computer aided learning and internship in respective reputed institutions for hands on training and the faculty experienced and projected a mission-oriented zeal and commitment to work

The academic programme is further strengthened by introducing Experimental Learning which is oriented towards marketing skills and resource generation, framing Home Science as a leading professional Hons, Degree.


The mission of the faculty is to enhance the standard of individuals in general and rural families in particular through teaching, research and extension activities. The main focus is on empowerment of woman and girl child in rural and urban households through self employment which would help them to become better resource managers and contribute towards rural development.

The mission is translated into action with the following objectives


. To strengthen skills and potentials of students through scientific principles, knowledge and experience acquired for optimum living.

. To foster development of students towards innovative research to augment the quality of life of family, community and industry in the challenging life scenario.

. To enable development of entrepreneurial skills at various levels.

. To instill appreciation for rural life, its problems and channel relevant mechanisms for progress.

*1964: Transformation of College of Domestic Science of Department of Technical Education, Andhra Pradesh into College of Home Science, Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University (APAU).

*1967: Establishment of Laboratory Nursery School.

*1968: Postgraduate Programme - M.Sc. Foods and Nutrition

*1974: First Ad-hoc research programme on "Evaluation of Special Nutrition Programmes" in Andhra Pradesh

* 1978: Ph.D programme in Foods and Nutrition and M.Sc Programme in Child Development and Home Management.

* 1983: College of Home Science in Bapatla, Guntur dt.

* 1984: MSc in Textiles and Clothing

* 1985: Establishment of Creche

* 1985: Post Graduate and Research Centre, Department of Food and Nutrition

* 1989: Diet Counselling Centre

* 1989: Revision of course curriculum of B.Sc (Home Science) to B.H.Sc (rural) from the academic year 1989-90 and introduction of Rural Home Science Work experience Programme (RHWEP), the first of its kind int he country.

* 1994: Elevation of the status of Dept of Foods and Nutrition to Centre of Advanced Studies in Nutrition (CAS) by ICAR.

* 1996: Ph.D in Child Development, Family Resource Management and Textiles and Clothing.

* 1996: Inclusion of Clothing and Textiles and Extension Education components in AICRP

* 1999: Introduction of four year degree programme B.H.Sc from the academic year 1999-2000, with professional degree in each specialisation

* 2002: Introduction of self financed UG and PG diploma programmes and certificate courses.

* 2003: Kindergarten school and Day care centre

* 2003: Licensing of ice-cream freezer and multipurpose fresh fish vending and display table, as women entrepreneur equipments.

* 2003: Recognition to the Department of Resource Management and Consumer Sciences as the Nodal agency for consumer education by the Department of Civil supplies, Govt of Andhra Pradesh.

* 2005: Revision of UG course curriculam as per the IV deans committee, ICAR and implementation from 2007-08

* 2005: Child guidance and family counseling centre

* 2006: Consumer club and Consumer Guidance and Counselling centre, Floral craft production unit

* 2008: Apparel production unit

* 2008: Revision of PG syllabus to suit revised UG syllabus of 2007-08

Research Progress

Formulation of technologies for farm women being the objective of Home science research, major thrust was placed on the areas of Food, nutrition and Health security, capacity building for drudgery reduction, value addition to farm and non farm waste, lielihood securty, consumer education and preschool education. AICRP research is run on niche approach. Presently its objectives are directed towards formulation of technologies for quality of life in rural Andhra Pradesh. Ad hoc projects were in operation as early as 1974, funded by renowned International and national organizations (UNICEF, CARE, Indo Dutch, IDRC, IFS, FF, CIRDAP, FAO, UNDP< US wheat associates, ICAR, ICMR, DST, MInistry of HRD, BARC) and State governemnt departments (Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Education, SERP, DPEP).
