    The Faculty of Medical Technology ("Thai": คณะเทคนิคการแพทย์, [Faculty of Medical Technology, Mahidol University, Mahidol University. http://www.mt.mahidol.ac.th] Mahidol University was established in 1957 as the first Medical Technology school in Thailand by the founding dean Prof. Vikul Viranuvatti, M.D. The Faculty is located on 2 sites, one at Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok-Noi Campus and the other at Salaya Campus. The Faculty has rise through the ranks to become one of the most prestigious institutes in Thailand, and is internationally recognized for its high caliber research, lecturing talent, and outstanding achievements in international academic collaboration and professional services.

    Organization

    The Faculty is composed of 5 departments, 1 laboratory center, and 1 administrative office. The department includes: Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Microscopy, Parasitology, and Radiological Technology. In addition, the Faculty offers medical technological services at Siriraj Hospital through the Center of Medical Laboratory Service. Furthermore, the Office of the Dean is responsible for administration and management of the Faculty.

    Academics

    Degree Programs

    The Faculty offers Bachelor and Master degrees in Medical Technology and Radiological Technology, Doctoral degree in Medical Technology, graduate diploma as well as short-course training programs for continuing education. During the last seven years, the Bachelor degree program has revolutionized its curriculum by utilizing competency-based learning to improve the quality and standard of education and to serve an important goal of preparing well-rounded medical technologist.

    Much effort has also been placed on the establishment of the Ph.D. program in Medical Technology as the first and one of the foremost Ph.D. programs in Southeast Asia and Pacific regions since 1995. Over a hundred Master and Doctoral students has enrolled in the programs and progressively produced significant international scientific accomplishments.

    Furthermore, foreign nationals from various countries, namely Kingdom of Bhutan, Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, People's Republic of Bangladesh, Republic of Maldives, Republic of Korea, Union of Myanmar, State of Nepal, and Republic of India, are sponsored by their home governmental organizations or the World Health Organization (WHO) to come to the Faculty of Medical Technology each year for training in various areas e.g. clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, microscopy, parasitology and radiological technology.

    In the near future, the Faculty will establish two new academic programs as follows: the International Bachelor degree program in Medical Technology and Biomedical Engineering.

    Honors and Awards

    With respect to successful achievements of the faculty, several prestigious academic awards from national and international institutions and organizations (e.g. honorary doctoral degree in technology from Lund University, visiting professorship from Lund University and Muenster University, Young Research Scholar from the Thailand Research Fund, Outstanding Lecturer Award from Mahidol University, and outstanding National Medical Technologist from the Medical Technology Association of Thailand etc.) have been bestowed upon the faculty members for their exceptional and talented academic endeavors and contributions to the research community.

    Rankings

    In a ranking conducted by The Thailand Research Fund of a total of 78 faculties from 26 universities The Faculty of Medical Technology was ranked first with the highest Impact Factor per Faculty Member. [Ranking by The Thailand Research Fund. http://www.mahidol.ac.th/mueng/news.htm] Moreover, the Faculty has consistently been ranked by the Commission on Higher Education as the best Medical Technology school in Thailand since 2005.

    Research

    The Faculty of Medical Technology, Mahidol University had rise through the ranks to become one of the foremost research institutes in Thailand producing significant contributions to the society and the research community. As such, the Faculty had produced, over the past five years, 200 research articles. Moreover, research works published by the Faculty has been cited more than 1000 times.

    Outreach to the Society

    In addition to its educational and research profiles, the Faculty has developed a number of professional roles for public and private sectors, with health science academic staff placing an increased emphasis on the areas of health promotion and quality of life improvement. The faculty has also continued to access the public’s need on appropriate technological solutions for a sustainable development of the society.

    To convene the quality of professional services offered throughout the country, the faculty has promoted the establishment of laboratory standardization and currently has a network of over a thousand members. Apart from this, partnership with international organizations has been made for the assessment of Quality Assurance, namely the Institute for Standardization and Documentation in the Medical Laboratory (Federal Republic of Germany), United Kingdom National External Quality Assessment Scheme in Biochemistry (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), and the Asian Quality Assurance Survey Program. Moreover, the Faculty has played a major role in the establishment of the Asian Network of Clinical Laboratory Standard and Harmonization with 10 countries.
