West Virginia State Community and Technical College (WVSCTC) is a comprehensive community and technical college that provides a broad spectrum of associate degrees, certificates, industry certifications, continuing education, community service, employee training, developmental and transfer education. WVSCTC is located in Institute, West Virginia on the campus of West Virginia State University.

History

WVSCTC was established in 1953 as a Community College on the campus of West Virginia State University, at the time West Virginia State College. In 2003, it was accredited as WVSCTC but remained administratively linked to WVSU. In 2008, the legislature fully separated The Community and Technical College. However, both schools continue to share the same campus.

WVSCTC grants twenty-three Associate in Applied Science Degrees, two Associate in Science Degrees, one Associate in Arts Degree, twelve Collegiate Certificate Programs, and eleven Collegiate Skill Set Certificates. The Associate in Science degrees are offered in several fields, including nuclear medicine technology, power plant technology and informationtechnology; Among the twelve Collegiate Certificate programs, certificates areavailable in accounting, community behavioral health technology; gerontology andtechnical studies. To meet the expressed need for nurses in the region, WVSCTCbegan its first Associate Degree in Nursing in the fall of 2005. Many of theAssociate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees transfer to baccalaureate degreeprograms at WVSU and other colleges and universities throughout the state and theregion.

WVSCTC has met the recommended criteria to become an independently accredited institution by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. In October 2004, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association approved WVSCTC to receive the maximum five-year initial accreditation. Additional Academic Programs include Nuclear Medicine Technology by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology and Electronics Engineering Technology by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Student Activities

Athletics

The athletic teams, known as the Yellow Jackets, compete in the NCAA's Division II as a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Even though WVSU and WVSCTC are separate colleges, students from both schools compete on the same athletics teams and when the teams play, only WVSU is recognized instead of WVSCTC.

On September 6, 2008, the Yellow Jacket Football team played in the 11th Annual Chicago Football Classic, which is for HBCU colleges and universities, in Chicago, Illinois at Soldier Field. The Yellow Jackets faced the Marauders of Central State University. The Yellow Jackets beat the Marauders 47 to 13.

2008 is the first year that WVSU was ranked in NCAA's Division II Football Poll since WVSU joined the NCAA Division II in 1995.

Marching Band

The Yellow Jackets Marching Band consists of 45 members under the direction of Scott E. Woodard. Mr. Woodard has been the Director of Bands since 2006. When he became the Director of Bands, only 7 students were signed up for band. The Band was invited to go to Chicago with the football team for the Chicago Football Classic. After the game the band competed in a Battle of the Bands competition against Central States Marching Band "The Invincible Marching Marauders". Central State won the competition. Even though the band lost, they can at least say they played at Soldier Field.

Juliana Kemp is the feature twirler for the Yellow Jacket Marching Band. She is a 2005 graduate of South Charleston High School. She is the only girl so far in the history of the Daily Mail Kanawha County Majorette and Band Festival to have won the honor of Miss Kanawha Majorette twice, once in 2003 and again in 2005.
