Philippine Élisabeth of Orléans

Philippine Élisabeth of Orléans

Philippine Élisabeth d'Orléans (December 18 1714 - May 21 1734) was the fifth daughter of Philippe II d'Orléans, duc d'Orléans (Regent of France from 1715 to 1723) and his wife, Françoise-Marie de Bourbon, the youngest illegitimate daughter of King Louis XIV of France and his most famous mistress, Madame de Montespan. As a member of the reigning House of Bourbon, (and being a member of the House of Orléans) Philippine Élisabeth was a Princesse du Sang.

Life

Born at the Palace of Versailles, she was known as "Mademoiselle de Beaujolais" in her youth. Bought up in a convent with her younger sister, Louise Diane d'Orléans she grew up in the era of the "Régence".

Since 1715, her father was "de facto" ruler of France as the regent for the child, King Louis XV of France. In 1718 the War of the Quadruple Alliance broke out between France and Spain. In 1720, King Philip V of Spain wanted to make peace and proposed a triple marriage; his three year old daughter, Infanta Mariana Victoria, would marry the fifteen year old Louis XV, and his son and heir, Infante Luis, would marry one of the Regent's daughters as would Infante Carlos.

It was decided that Philippine would marry the younger of Philips sons - Infante Carlos - due to her being one of the only daughters not married. In 1726, aged just 11 years old, her sister by then already in spain, she set off for the capital of her new home Madrid, Spain.

Her husband was expected to become the Ruler of Tuscany [Philippines cousin, the childless Gian Gastone de' Medici, the "Grand Duke of Tuscany" did not have an heir and as such the state was a possible future addition to the spanish Empire] as his half brother Luis was the heir to the throne of Spain being his fathers first son.

The union, supposed to make peace, remained sterile and no children were produced from the marriage. As a result, the marriage was dissolved by a disappointed Philip V. Philippine, like her sister who's marriage was also dissolved, was called back to France in 1728. She lived quietly at her mothers favourite home, the "Château de Bagnolet" in Paris. It was at her mothers favourite Château that the young Philippine died in 1734 at the age of 19. She died of Smallpox.
