Louise Diane of Orléans

Louise Diane of Orléans

Louise Diane d'Orléans, princesse de Conti (27 June 1716-26 September 1736) was the sixth daughter and last child of Philippe II d'Orléans, duc d'Orléans (Regent of France from 1715 to 1723) and his wife, Françoise-Marie de Bourbon, the youngest illegitimate daughter of King Louis XIV of France and his most famous mistress, Madame de Montespan.

Life

As a member of the reigning House of Bourbon, she was a Princesse du Sang. As her mother, by then the duchesse d'Orléans was illegitimate by birth, Louise Diane, like her siblings, was not able to officially call herself a petite-fille de France.

Louise Diane was born in the Palais-Royal, the Paris home of the House of Orléans, on 27 June 1716 and died at the Château d'Issy at Issy on 26 September 1736. Until her marriage, she was known as Mademoiselle de Chartres and grew up with her other siblings:

Marriage

In December 1731, it was decided that she would marry her distant cousin Louis François I de Bourbon, prince de Conti. After being baptised on January 19 1732 by the "Armand Gaston Maximilien de Rohan, cardinal de Rohan" (then the Grand Almoner of France), she would marry into the Bourbon-Conti line two days after her her baptism. The marriage ceromony took place at the Château de Versaillesl, Louise Diane was at the age of 15.

After this marriage, she became known as the princesse de Conti. After two years, she gave birth to a son and heir to the Conti name:

*Louis François II de Bourbon, prince de Conti

She died in 1736 after childbirth. The child also died. She was buried at the l'église Saint-André-des-Arcs (The Church of Saint-André-des-Arcs). Her son was the last prince de Conti.
