Joseph Churchward, born in 1933 in the
‘aiga Sā Anae inSamoa , is aSamoan New Zealander graphic designer andtypesetter . He is famous for having designedfont s now used around the world, notably on opticians'eye chart s. His designs are also used in themasthead s of the newspapers "The Evening Post " and "The Dominion Post ". He has handcrafted over 570 originaltypeface s, and continues to do so to this day. New Zealand in 1946 to study atMiramar South School inWellington . In 1948, he obtained an Art Distinction Award in Lettering fromWellington Technical College and began a career as a commercial artist. Churchward has created more than 582 original typefaces, which is reputed to be more than any other individual in the world. He is currently working on another 20, which will push him over his goal of 600. In 2008, a special exhibition was set up for his art at the
Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa .
