"The Gargoyle" is the debut novel by Andrew Davidson. It was heavily influenced by some of his favorite authors.

Plot

The main character, an atheist and former porn star, is now a hideously scarred burn victim, due to a car crash caused by drunk driving. The story revolves around his relationship with a mysterious visitor to the burn ward, a sculptor seemingly troubled by schizophrenia, and who claims that they knew each other as lovers several hundred years prior. The stories she tells him forge a bond between the two, and provides him with the inspiration to gain control of his new life.

Reception

Janet Maslin of "The New York Times" reviewed the book, saying "So for all those who enter here, there is no need to abandon hope. Lessons are learned, love is found, spirits are restored, and faith is revealed, all in the overheated cauldron of Mr. Davidson’s imagination.
