- The WISE Campaign
The WISE Campaign (Women into Science, Engineering and Construction) encourages young women, under 19 years old, to value and pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths or Construction related courses in School or College and move on into related careers. Its mission statement aims to faciliate understanding of these disciplines among young girls and the opportunities which they present at a professional level. Through its initiatives, the campaign has helped to double the percentage of female engineering graduates from 7% in 1984 to 15% today. One of WISE's main objectives is to listen to students and understand and voice their opinions to academic institutions, policymakers and employers. It then works creatively with delivery agencies and others, offering models, tools and approaches to support them in challenging traditional approaches, so as to demonstrate equitable involvement with, and results for girls. WISE combats gender stereotypes to get more young women involved in careers where female participation was once considered near impossible.
WISE operates throughout the UK, with specialist comittees in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Volunteers, from industry and relevant organisations, attend the various WISE committee meetings, and undertake projects for the WISE Campaign.
WISE is financially supported by three engineering organisations - The
Royal Academy of Engineering , TheEngineering and Technology Board , and the EEF - and by two Sector Skills Councils -SEMTA andConstructionSkills . It also receives money fromDIUS throughSTEMNET .
