Shear velocity is a form by which a shear stress may be re-written in units of velocity. This is typically done when solving problems of shear stress distributions in fluids; this is often solved in relation to problems of sediment transport.

u_{star}=sqrt{frac{ au_b}{ ho

Where au_b is the shear stress given at a boundary (this is the common, though not necessary, usage), and ho is the density of the fluid.
