It was built in 1854 by Seth Shaw, who with his brother Stephen Shaw had arrived by canoe in 1852 to build a cabin, clear some land, claim it and found Ferndale. In designing the house, Seth Shaw was inspired byNathaniel Hawthorne 'sHouse of Seven Gables . It served as the area's firstcourthouse as well aspost office .
